Utopies and Cibrâil winners at 5th Festival de Cine Gai y Lésbicu d'Asturies








Utopies, a shortfilm from austrian director Manfred Rott, was awarded as Best Shortfilm at the 5th Festival de Cine Gai y Lésbicu d'Asturies - CinegailesAST 2011, the Gay-Lesbian Film festival of Asturies. In second position as Best Shortfilm was A los que gritan, from spaniard Juanan Martínez and third onde for El mueble de las fotos from italian filmaker Giovanni Maccelli. Cibrâil, a film by german director Tor Iben was awarded as Best Film. Otherwise the film Rosario Miranda of David Baute got the Best Documentary Award in this 5th edition of the Festival CinegaileAST that took place in Xixón (Asturies-Spain) from 14 to 17 of December 2011 at the Antigu Institutu Cultural Center. Honour Prize was this year for director Stanley Kwan (Hong Kong, 1957).

Utopies (Manfred Rott, 2010), filmed in black and white, is a poétic and valiant filming about love in teenagers through the feelings of a young couple of young boys.

Cibrâil (Tor Iben, 2011) tells the story of a policemen of turkish origin that lives in Berlin with his fiancée and sees his life changing after falling in love suddenly with his girl’s cousin, that comes to his house for some days of holidays in the city.

Rosario Miranda, from canarian filmaker David Baute is a lovely portrait of a humble old man living in a villaje of Tenerife island that dresses up as woman, a film that tries to approach and understand the reality of transexuality in the older people.

Stanley Kwan (Hong Kong, 1957) is one of the very few filmakers that recognizes himself as gay of all over Asia and has worked films about homosexuality. He openly bécame a gay director since 1996 when he screened Yan-Yin, a documentary film about the chinese film history seen from the point ot view of sexuality and gender roles. He has directed some 17 films till now. His first film “Women” (1985) was alla a succes folowed by meany others that used to understand and reflect the struggles of women for their aspirations in love and relationships. Other of his films that were marking his style were: Rouge (1987), Full Moon in New York (1989), Centre Stage (1992; aka Actress), a biopic on silent film star Ruan Lingyu and Everlasting Regret (2005), are all such typical Kwan films. Red Rose White Rose (1994) is an adaptation of an Eileen Chang novel. His film Yan-Lu (2001) adapts a gay love story originally published on the Internet.
